Verbal Communication

The act of talking comes to mind frequently when someone thinks about communication. To communicate with one another and grow as people, verbal communication is essential to our development. Although spoken communication is frequently conjured up when the phrase “verbal communication” is used, written communication is also a component of verbal communication. Non-verbal Communication

Nonlinguistic means are used to express nonverbal communication. Human behavior and characteristics—such as appearance, way of using objects, sound, time, smell, and space—have socially shared meaning and inspire others to do the same. It includes vocal/paralinguistic cues like volume, pitch, rate, and inflection; proxemic cues like distance and space; olfactory or smell cues; cues provided by artifactual communication and appearance; cues sent by color; and chronemic or time cues. Visual/kinesic cues include facial expressions, eye movements, gestures, and body orientation. In easy way we say that, The transmission of messages or signals by nonverbal cues like touch, voice, body language, eye contact, social distance, appearance, and item use is known as nonverbal communication.

 

Difference Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

Category Verbal Communication Non-verbal Communication
Meaning It is define as the verbal or written transmission of knowledge through words. It is described as information sharing without use of words.
Communication medium It uses words, voice, language, and sentences to communicate with others. It uses facial expressions, body language, eye movement, etc. to communicate with others.
Decoding level Understanding verbal communication requires listening intently to the other person and being familiar with the vocabulary and syntax used. Compared to verbal communication, decoding in non-verbal communication is more difficult. We must be aware of a number of things, including facial expressions and body language.
Awareness It includes more awareness because a person needs to think and analyse before speaking. It does not require thinking deeply while expressing his/her views non-verbally.
Medium Verbal communication requires a single medium to communicate. Non-verbal communication requires multiple mediums.
Examples Face-to-face communication, audio or video recordings, loudspeakers, etc The communication takes place through hand movements, expressions, eye movement, etc. between two people who can see each other.
